Dwight Howard record 39 free throws attempted

Holy crap that is a lot of free throws.  Definately Hack a Shaq to a new level.  But how hard is it to hit a dang free throw?? Being a Lakers fan forever watching Shaq was … just painful.  And do not blame it on being tall … Kareem shot 72% for his career, heck Jack Sikma was 6’11″ and shot over 90% twice, and Shawn Bradley was 7’6′ shooting over 80% three times and a career of over 70%.

Modify the Rooney Rule – Another post about “inequalities” in the NFL Coaching Ranks

You can read the article Here.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the article, but how much is enough when is comes to opportunities for the “African American” coaches?  Hey, I cannot imagine the racism for those that went through it, and some of the stories one of my good friends (Who is knocking on 60) are hard to imagine.  But being a math guy I start looking at some simple facts.

1) Per the 2011 Census 12.6% of the American Population is Black
2) The article mentioned that there are currently six black coaches in the NFL. That comes to 18%
3) Per the NFL Race Report Card 32% of assistant coaches were black
4) There are nine black coordinators : 28%
5) There are seven black assistant head coaches : 22%
6) There are five black general managers : 16%
And I could go on and on. You can see all the stats in the NFL race report card. In almost every position there are more than 12.6% coverage in black employment.

Is there still some racism out there? Sure.  There will always be some idiots.  But at the same time “equality” does not translate into “half”.  So chill out on the inequalities, and if there is a race that could bitch about not being represented is should be the Hispanic’s/Latino’s who compromize 16.3% of the population and are scarcely present anywhere in the NFL.

Punters On Steroids?

I know … punters … who cares.  Say the word punter to me and one thing comes to mind … watching Ray guy and the hang time clock on TV.  And knowing his punts were probably going around 45 yards in normal circumstances.  Some reason I clicked on the punting stats and noticed dang near all punters were around 45 yards with 17 over 45 in total.  So I look up the last few years and got this :

Number of punters averaging over 45 yards by year :
2011 – 17
2010 – 8
2009 – 11
2008 – 9
2007 – 7
2006 – 5
2005 – 4
2004 – 2
2003 – 1
2002 – 1
I spot checked all the way back intot he 1960′s and every year you may have one, or two guys hitting that 45 yard average benchmark.  Now the NFL average is 45.27/YDS.  In 2000 it was 41.89/YDS. Now 3.38 yards different may not sound like much, but with 2,500 punts in a year that ads up to 8,450 additional yards an offense had to go to score.
Was there something I missed with a change in balls?  Are punters actually turning into athletes?
